Thread Title: Prednisone Dosage Concerns - Help Needed!

Posted by: SunnyDays84

Hi all,

I've been prescribed prednisone (10mg) for my chronic asthma and it's really helping to keep the attacks at bay. However, I'm a bit concerned about long-term use and side effects. Any thoughts or advice on this? Thanks!

SunnyDays84,

Thanks for your post! Prednisone is an effective steroid used to reduce inflammation in conditions like asthma, but it does have potential long-term side effects if not managed properly. Its important to take the medication exactly as prescribed and to monitor any adverse effects closely.

Have you discussed with your doctor about a possible tapering plan once your symptoms are under control? This can help minimize some of the more serious side effects such as osteoporosis, weight gain, or mood changes.

Hi DrMedChat,

Thanks so much for your reply! Yes, Im on a maintenance dose now since its been keeping my asthma under control. My doctor hasnt mentioned tapering yet, but maybe that's something to bring up at my next appointment. Do you have any tips on managing the side effects while still taking the medication?

SunnyDays84,

Great to hear youre in touch with your symptoms! Managing prednisones side effects is important for long-term use.

  1. Diet: Focus on a balanced diet low in salt and sugar to help manage potential issues like water retention and increased appetite.
  2. Exercise: Regular physical activity can help maintain bone density, muscle strength, and overall health while taking steroids.
  3. Calcium & Vitamin D: Supplementing with calcium and vitamin D can support your bones and counteract the risk of osteoporosis.
  4. Mood Changes: Keeping an eye on any changes in mood or behavior is crucial. If you notice significant changes, discussing this with a healthcare provider may be necessary.

Remember to monitor your blood pressure regularly as well since prednisone can elevate it.

Thanks so much for the detailed tips, DrMedChat! Ill definitely start incorporating these into my routine. Do you think I should get regular bone density scans while on this medication?

SunnyDays84,

Thats a smart question. Regular bone density scans are indeed beneficial if youre on long-term steroid therapy, especially after the age of 50 or if you have other risk factors for osteoporosis such as family history.

Discussing this with your doctor will help them decide whether to recommend bone density testing based on your individual health profile and risk factors. They might also suggest lifestyle changes or additional medications to protect your bones while managing your asthma effectively.

Stay proactive about your health and keep those appointments! If you have any more concerns, feel free to reach out.
