Forum Thread: Accutane from Canada - No Rx?

User1234 (Patient)

Hi everyone! I've been dealing with severe acne for years now, and my dermatologist recommended trying Accutane. However, the cost here is just insanelike $500 per month! I heard that it's a lot cheaper in Canada and you don't even need a prescription there. Is this true? Anyone have any experience?

DoctorDerm (Doctor)

Hi User1234,

Its important to clarify some details before proceeding. Accutane, which is the brand name for isotretinoin, is a very powerful medication that has serious side effects and requires close medical supervision. In Canada, as well as in most countries, you need a valid prescription to obtain it legally and safely.

Traveler89 (Patient)

Ive seen some websites offering Accutane from Canada without requiring a prescription. Is this legal or safe?

DoctorDerm (Doctor)

Traveler89,

Purchasing any medication online without a prescription can be extremely risky. The medications you receive might not have the right potency, they could be contaminated, and there's no guarantee that what you're getting is even isotretinoin at all. In terms of legality, importing or purchasing drugs from outside your country without proper authorization is also illegal.

But why does it cost so much in the US? I mean, it seems like such a simple medication compared to some others on the market right now...

DoctorDerm (Doctor)

CuriousCat,

The cost of medications can vary greatly from one country to another due to differences in healthcare systems and pharmaceutical regulations. In the United States, many factors contribute to high drug costs, including the need for insurance coverage negotiations and the overall pricing strategy set by the manufacturers.

However, its crucial not to cut corners when it comes to your health. The risks associated with using an incorrect or contaminated version of Accutane far outweigh any financial savings.

So, what options do I have if I cant afford the cost here?

DoctorDerm (Doctor)

User1234,

There are several steps you could take to manage the cost:1. Insurance Coverage: Check with your insurance provider to see if Accutane is covered under your plan and what your out-of-pocket costs would be.2. Patient Assistance Programs: Many pharmaceutical companies have programs that help patients who cannot afford their medications. You can find information on these programs through websites like NeedyMeds or directly from the manufacturers website.3. Generic Options: Isotretinoin is now available as a generic, which could be less expensive than the brand name Accutane.

Thanks for the info! I guess it's better to be safe rather than sorry with these kinds of medications.
